Discussion & Comments

This place is of course open for comments and discussion!
By now a few comments were posted to other entries, but in order to organise this blog a bit better, I'd like to have general comments posted here, while comments to any other entries should rather be about the respective entry.

So, write away!

Hi! Very glad to discover the blog, that will contain such complete material. Do you plan to include Bennett-Basie sessions with rare tracks?

Hi pavel!

Sorry but I don't have any Basie/Bennett sessions. This blog will serve only to post live music by Basie, not officially released albums.

Basie/Bennett disco (as far as I'm aware):

1958-11-19 live session, poss. Washington D.C. (Bennett, Basie, Green, George Duvivier, Jimmy Crawford, Joe Williams)

1958-11-19 Roulette session with the Basie Orchestra + Ralph Sharon

1958-12-22 Columbia session with Basie's band and Sharon plus Candido

1958-12-30 Columbia session
with Basie's band and Sharon

1959-01-03 Roulette session
with Basie's band and Sharon

1959-01-05 Roulette session
with Basie's band and Sharon
(released on Allegro)

******************

Would these tracks on Allegro be the "rare" ones?

If anyone has the first, live session from 1958 to share, that one would fit in here perfectly!
Preferred format is FLAC, but high quality MP3 would be welcome, too!

Hi,

I'm enjoying those October 1941 broadcasts a lot--thank you!

If you're interested, I've got a 25 minute Basie broadcast from the Blue Note in Chicago on 2/8/53 that I could send your way.

I'd assume the one you have as Feb. 8 would be the former of these two?
Would be terrific to hear it!

How do you want to handle this? Will you upload it yourself and share the link with me, or share it here publicly?
Or should I get it from you first and then upload it myself?
Whatever suits you will be right for me! You can drop me an email via my blogger profile, too!

Fantastic site--a real education.
I knew Clayde Williams in the 1990s, and it appears he played on a live recording with Basie (1936?) I believe it was a broadcast from a hotel. There was a cut featuring his violin. Would you happen to know which one it was, and how I could obtain a copy? Thanks so much.

That 1936 session with Williams will be posted... I have *lots* of music from the early years still to come! Alas, time's rarer these days...

Thanks Ubu--
Looking forward to it.

Salut!
I discovered this blog from your message in "Call It Anything".

If i understand, you will post only "bootlegs" from Basie ??
No chance to get the fantastic :"Jazz at Santa Monica Civic '72" ??
Thanks anyway !

Yes alain, that's correct: live music only, and generally not including live music that has been on legit releases.

I still do believe in buying legit CD releases... I guess that's old-fashioned and might be out of line in the blogosphere, but hey...

I was very glad to see that a Basie blog was starting, and look forward to catching up on your posts. Too bad the plan for a complete discography went astray, but I can appreciate the amount of work involved. Hope the timeline points to key live recordings.
Regards, Mike H.

Mike, I'm not an authority on Basie, not at all... so no, I can't highlight particular live sessions in the timeline, because of the simple fact that I'm not familiar enough with the music!
